Welp, I guess that island just withdrew from the Paris Accord. And might be paying a visit to The Hague soon.

How many horsepower is a volcano after tune? I do think the volcano may have too much boost.

The day may come when Men no longer make LotR references whenever New Zealand is mentioned.

But it is not this day.

I hope they find more survivors, but it couldn’t have been a good idea to allow  daily t ourist access to a known unstable volcano.

Down to 8 missing now, on top of the 5 dead. Police say they’re pretty much sure the other 8 are dead too - the environment’s not survivable. Most of those on the island were from a cruise ship (Ovation of the Seas), which stereotyping wildly says a good chunk of them were probably American.

White Island’s highly active, but typically gives some warning when it’s going to go off, so running tourists out there’s not as dumb as it seems. Except this time, of course. But then we’ve built our largest city on top of an active volcano field and the whole country’s an earthquake zone, so clearly our idea of “not as dumb as it seems” when it comes to tectonic activity   is as well calibrated as an Alfisti’s when it comes to  reliability.

I’d say the tourism business is shut down for good though, which is going to be hard on the town of Whakatane.

I was talking to my sister-in-law this morning. She’s a nurse, and lives in Tauranga, the nearest major port to White Island. She spent most of yesterday afternoon on the phone giving the crew of an offshore fishing boat a crash course in mass treatment of burn victims, as they steamed in the direction of the island in response to a civil defence aid request. Didn’t prove necessary, they were stood down before they arrived, but it sounds like it was a pretty confused few hours for the authorities. Due to the large cruise ship in port there were fears of a lot more people being on the island than proved to be the case.

Apparently the university’s vulcanology group had a webcam going which captured footage of people actually inside the crater just before it went off. At least it’d be quick....

Thanks for being the man on the ground, in a way. I’d seen both the “up to 50" early reports, then some of the reports of burns, and as to some of those “missing”... yeah. Rather grim stuff, unfortunately. At least those on the ship got a show, I suppose.

I’ve long had interest in volcanoes and the disasters related to them - Mt. Pelee, Krakatoa, and others. Fascinating, but easily very horrifying as well.

Not gonna lie, this kind of tour is right up my alley. Me and my girlfriend have been tal king about going to NZ. Easily could’ve been us there. Such a tragedy.

Mount St. Helens was pretty heavily tuned and she out around 37, 400, 000, 000 hp.

“Up to 50" turned out to be about right: they got 36 off, all of whom wound up hospitalized (all of the 5 confirmed dead died in hospital), plus the 8 missing makes  44 . But in the early hours they were saying “more than 100".

They were talking this morning on the radio to an Australian reporter who happened to be on holiday on the cruise ship, and whose cabin has a view of the ship’s bridge. She says the Captain spent the entire afternoon standing on the outside bridge wing talking on two phones simultaneously. I bet when it all went south he had literally thousands of pax off the ship and no idea where a good proportion of them were - Ovation of the Seas is one of the largest liners ships in the world, and they allow passengers a lot of freedom in “safe” ports like NZ. This will have been one of those days when he really earned the big bucks.

BBC interviewed a nZ geologist and warnings had been made and some tour canceled. Th degree of the warning and if the warning was spread  to everyone wasn’t specified.
